Mould is a huge problem. Don’t let it build up.

Residential and commercial Mould removal services

Mould is gross; it will eat your house and make you sick while it’s at it. Mould growth can occur several ways, and once it’s present it’s difficult to get rid of on your own. It grows anywhere there is moisture build up present. Often these are areas out of sight, in the walls and floors. Once they become visible, however, the damage has already been done from the inside out. You wouldn’t think it, but mould can actually cause a tremendous amount of structural damage to your house. First mould spores spread and grow on the many surfaces with improper ventilation. Depending on the amount of moisture, visible mould growth can occur in under 48 hours. Mould growth does not discriminate what surface it grows on and can affect electrical components, drywall, insulation, and wood framing. If enough mould grows on the framing of the house, fungi can develop and turn into wood rot. Literally, mould can cause your house to rot.

The health implications of mould are equally as dangerous. While mild exposure to some moulds may not be as harmful, there are common household moulds that are carcinogenic or cause long term health consequences. Often if mould is present, you may be able to smell it before you see it. If it’s in the open, you may develop mild symptoms such as congestion, sore throat, sneezing fits, coughing, and even wheezing. For individuals with compromised immune systems or preexisting respiratory health conditions, the same symptoms can wreak havoc. Long term consequences of toxic mould can be neurological such as mood disorders, insomnia, memory loss, and confusion. People without asthma can develop asthma, and in more severe cases of toxic mould, lead to pulmonary fibrosis which is a scarring of lung tissue. Excluding the serious cases of mould exposure, once the mould has been removed your body will naturally clean it out over time. Sometimes mould detoxification can take up to 6 months.

Mould Remediation is the best way to remove mould.

Professional mould assessment.

When you choose to hire a mould removal service, the process begins with a mould inspection. Professional inspections can uncover the extent of mould issues present. Typically if mould is growing on a wall or ceiling, and there is no obvious source of moisture, then the moisture build up can be coming from the ventilation, ducts, or from within the walls itself. So a mould inspection will find the root cause of the build up right at the source. In addition to that, mould testing will help determine what kind of mould is growing and how present spores are in the air to help determine potential spread. Bottom line is a mould assessment will give you a clear picture of the problem.

Thorough abatement .

Once the mould assessment is complete, the mould remediation service can begin. Technicians arrive in full PPE and start by sectioning off the area to prevent spread and cross contamination. The materials that need to be demolished will be safely removed in disposal bags, and this will suppress any dust that could have mould spores present. The surfaces that have been rotted will be removed and replaced, whereas the materials that were salvageable will be thoroughly cleaned. Within a day of completion, the area goes through different tests to verify there is no presence of moisture or airborne spores.

Improved air quality.

As mentioned earlier, mould presents numerous health consequences ranging in severity levels. Mould spores are microscopic and are therefore light enough to become airborne. Once you breath in mould spores and they infect your lungs, you will develop respiratory symptoms. The benefit of having mould abatement done in your home is you will inadvertently improve the air quality by removing mould spores once and for all. The secret is in the preparation and procedures. An expert will section the area so that no airborne spread can occur during the remediation, and testing will occur one completed to ensure mould is no longer present and won’t be making a comeback.

Note: a fair number of mould situations are related to water damage. If there is a leak discovered, then the leak will be repaired prior to any abatement taking place.  The huge advantage of hiring a professional mould removal service is not only do you not have to get your hands dirty, but you will have the root of the mould issue solved without any future spread.

Andrew B., Riverbend Resident

“Our youngest son developed asthma which led to us discovering mould in our ducts. We had no idea an air conditioner could create mould throughout our house. Fortunately his symptoms were not severe, and we were recommended Abatement Edmonton to come and assess the situation. They were professional, answered all our questions, and really wanted to provide us with all the information we needed to make the right decision. We appreciated this and ultimately hired them to clean out the mould. Thank you guys for a job well done.”

George L., Rutherford Resident

“Our house was built recently in 2019. Buying new, we never thought we would inherit any issues. Needless to say some siding was improperly installed near the roof and moisture was slowly building up. We somehow managed to get through 2 winters without noticing anything as it was all contained in the attic. It was only until we started to see some moisture build up on the ceiling of one of the bedrooms. This was a huge undertaking, and we truly appreciate Abatement Edmonton for helping us not only remove the mould but rebuild the damage. Quality work, and Declan’s a nice guy.“

Cassandra & Aaron R., Bonnie Doon Resident

“My wife and I purchased a home in central Edmonton to be close to everything. Within weeks we started to get sick. The house was a previous rental property the owner had flipped. All the fixtures were brand new right before we bought it. Long story short, always have an inspection done and don’t assume anything, like we did. Fortunately we are both young and healthy. We were recommended Abatement Edmonton by our parents who hired them for Asbestos removal. They came in and abated mould from two bedrooms. We’ve since had no symptoms and are grateful for their work. Thank you guys!”

Under certain circumstances will mould remediation be covered by homeowners insurance. They will not cover removal if the mould was caused by neglect or preventative maintenance. The term they like to use is a “covered peril”, which is basically when mould occurs from freak accidents (frozen pipe bursts), or severe weather (flash flooding or fire caused by lightning strike). If you feel the mould could have been caused by these circumstances, then it’s best to contact your insurance company after you receive your assessment and know the root cause of the mould.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mould Removal...

We understand the prospect of discovering mould can be stressful. We’re here to assist you along the way as your progress through the abatement process. Here are some commonly asked questions by our previous customers that might help you gain a better understanding. If we were not able to answer your questions here, please give us a call and we will assist with any remaining concerns.

Q: How long will mould removal in my home take?

A: You will know for certain once your mould assessment is completed by one of our technicians. The time frame typically depends on size, scope, and hazard level. For example, a bathroom floor will be easier and faster than a rotting attic. Typically the average job can take 1 to 5 days.

Q: How do you know what mould is dangerous?

A: The answer often depends on the quantity of mould you are exposed to over time. If you smell mould, it’s probably abundant. If you see mould, and have tried cleaning it, then you know there’s a deeper issue. And if you are experiencing health consequences such as difficulty breathing, then you know for certain you are being exposed to a dangerous amount of mould. At that point the mould has probably spread far beyond its source. A mould assessment is your best bet.

Q: Is it expensive to remove mould?

A: The price can vary depending on the situation. Every property brings with it unique constraints and challenges. If the root source of the mould is obvious and easy to fix and the damage is minimal, it will be less expensive. By contrast, if there are two leaks - one obvious and one not so obvious that only can be found with an inspection - and the spread has occurred for a number of months to the point where the structure of the house is rotting, then you know it will not be cheap.

Q: Do I really need mould remediation? Can I remove it myself?

A: If the source of the mould can be fixed by yourself (such as a leaky pipe under your sink), and the mould is easily cleaned up and does not return, then there’s no problem with DIY. There are many DIY kits available at your local home hardware store. If, however, you are getting sick from mould - chances are the scope of work is too vast and extensive to do on your own. And even if you do make an attempt, you are running the risk of further health exposure and airborne spread by disturbing so much material. This is where a professional comes in handy. Have it done right the first time and save yourself the headache (literally).
